As I’ve often noted, a vacation rental is often the most economical and convenient way to arrange accommodations at a vacation destination. For minimum cost, I normally recommend renting through one of the big online agencies with lots of listings. But you can sometimes do even better if you bypass a listing site and contact an owner directly.

These days, more and more owners are posting their properties on the big online “want ad” sites – Craigslist and Kijiji. Although these sites may cut your costs a bit, however, you may also run some added risks by using them.

Both sites are easy to navigate:

• On Craigslist, you first enter the area where you want to rent, then check “vacation rentals” under “housing” for listings. On my spot checks, all listings were in English, either as a default or an option, and you can screen the raw lists by several factors.

• Kijiji works about the same way, except that the original listings are in a local language for foreign rentals. Detailed property listings, however, are in English.

I saw some outstanding prices when I was browsing through both Web sites, including four-bedroom villa for under $1,000 a week. Many of the listings are obviously identical to those on the major rent-from-owner sites that charge listing fees. Some, though, cover the type of rental you seldom see on other sites: personal homes available for between a few weeks and a month or two while the owners are away somewhere else on vacation.

“Caveat emptor” is the watchword whenever you buy anything from an unmanaged “want ad” site like Craigslist. The big vacation rental sites, such as Vacation Rentals by Owner, exercise at least some supervision over their listings: They de-list sellers who have misrepresented their offerings or taken money under false pretenses. Not so with Craigslist: You’re on your own to protect your payment, and the risks of a problem are higher when you pay months in advance for a rental than when you buy merchandise from someone who lives in your community.

I suspect most of you will rent through one of the big rental specialist sites. The largest operator in this marketplace is Home Away, which has acquired a group of individual sites with an aggregate of more than 250,000 worldwide listings.

Disney has opened its newest restraunt at Walt Disney World.

The first phase of Kidani Village, a time-share extension of Disney's Animal Kingdom Lodge, formally opened May 1. The name comes from the Swahili word for "necklace" and is meant to represent the resort's layout.

Sixty percent of the development's 340 units are now accepting guests, with the remainder due to open by September. The amenities include Sanaa, a 150-seat restaurant serving African cooking infused with Indian flavors; Uwanja Camp, a themed water-play area; and Samawati Springs Pool, a themed pool area with a 128-foot-long water slide and two whirlpool spas.

On a recent trip to Orlando we decided to take a hot air balloon flight, there are a number of companies offering this but we booked with Thompson Aire run by Jeff Thompson as they had been highly recommended.

At the time of writing this the cost was $185 per adult + tax and if you have more than 4 or 6 in your group you get an extra discount (this does include breakfast after the flight). They have balloon flights everyday which start at around 6am but you do need to book in advance as they get full up quickly especially around the holidays.

We met them the next morning at 6am up on HWY192, they then decide which way the wind is going so they can plan a route for the flight. We started down HWY192 by Old Town with a route that would take us over the 192, Celebration, Reunion and end up near Champions Gate.

You are expected to help unpack and inflate the balloon which is great fun and not very hard. Each balloon can hold 4 passengers and a captain and once in you are lifted up very smoothly and quietly to around 1000ft which is the max flying height for this area. Our flight lasted about 1 hour and 15 minutes which went very fast but I can’t wait until I am back in Orlando to do it again.

I had last visited Walt Disney World when NASA was still sending astronauts to the moon. I guess it was about time to go back, especially with a six-year-old daughter.

And that's what we did. You may have noticed an absence of my blatherings the past couple of weeks. Vacation. Away. No workee.

And we did it in smart style, I must say. A total of 11 family members flew to Orlando Jan. 27 for a week away from winter.

Here are some unsolicited tips from yours truly if you are thinking of going to Orlando:

* . The most important thing is something I've said many times before in this column and an item that unfortunately, at times, got overlooked when we were down there -- proceed on the kids' clock. Do things at their speed with them in mind. The smiles and giggles are incredibly rewarding and go a long way in forgetting how tired one's feet get by the end of the day.

.* Take comfortable walking shoes. Very comfortable.

* . Mine the Internet for deals. If you prefer to use a travel agent, that's great, but there are deals to be found online for other aspects of the vacation. From accommodations to vehicle rentals to park passes, the Internet has it all a mouse click away. And it allows you to comparison shop.

We snagged Disney passes through CAA, but only after checking out prices in the U. S.

The Universal Studios passes were obtained online, where we learned full-week passes were only a few bucks more than one-day tickets.

Our rental house was sifted out from a slew of rental properties online.
Car rental came with the help of Air Miles, but only after a good look at prices from the various agencies, all thanks to the Internet.
* . Fly. If you can afford it, with young kids, it is the way to go. The flight time is well under three hours either way, compared to a 24-hour drive. Flights are pretty darned cheap these days.

* . If you go with more than one family, rent a house. It's a great relaxation spot after a long day at a theme park. It also gives you more freedom to visit more than one park. And a place to cook meals rather than eat out.

We stayed in a house a handful of kilometres from the various Disney parks. This is the way to go.

We rented the place for a week. It was awesome, and reasonably priced when you factor in three families sharing the cost. We had six bedrooms, including one with a princess theme and one with a pirate theme for the little ones. Each bedroom had a TV, while the family room downstairs had a large HDTV, which was perfect for watching the Superbowl.

Other amenities included a games room and heated pool and hot tub. The kids loved the pool, while the adults loved the hot tub, especially after long days wandering around theme parks.

Trust me when I say you do a lot of walking if you go to Disney, especially at Epcot.

While we were down there, Chatham-Kent was in a deep freeze. I was in a hot tub every night, enjoying a cold brew or two and rubbing it into friends back home.

* . If you are taking the trip and aren't on a tight budget, by all means eat at some of the finer restaurants on Disney properties. We had an outstanding meal in the Japanese pavilion of Epcot at Mitsukoshi's Teppan Edo restaurant. The chefs grilled the food right at our table. And it was delicious. Our daughter surprised the heck out of me, enjoying the chicken cooked with sesame seeds, and loved dipping it into a mustard-based hot sauce that was too warm for other people's taste at the table. She still talks about the onion volcano, too.

I loved the German Biergarten buffet restaurant, also at Epcot. Schnitzel and beer. Hold the sauerkraut.

* . If you are going on a tight budget, AVOID the Disney sit-down restaurants. They ferociously attack your wallet. Bring snacks and drinks in a backpack and store it in one of the lockers near the entrance to each park.

* . If you want to buy Disney merchandise while down there, try to avoid doing it at the theme parks. It's usually much cheaper at places such as Wal- Mart. And Wal-Marts there sell beer for the dads.

But if you want one-of-a- kind items, then shop in Disney. How about a gemmed replica of the castle at Magic Kingdom? We saw one on display at a crystal shop near the Biergarten, with a price tag of a staggering $37,500. I can't imagine how many of those Disney sells.

.* If you have a young daughter, book Cinderella's Royal Table meal. The food is fabulous, and the look on your daughter's face is worth it alone. Our daughter also had an autograph book, and all the Disney princesses came over to the table, signing the book and getting their picture taken. It's one-stop shopping for tracking down the princesses.

* . Get your child an autograph book. Along with the pictures, the book will be a great memento of an excellent vacation.

* . Don't just go to one park. Disney had some great sights and rides, but Universal was awesome, as well. The Simpson's ride was particularly exciting and hilarious.

Universal seemed to have some great watering holes, too.

Jimmy Buffett's Margaritaville and Bubba Gump Shrimp Co. are two great places to have a drink or a meal in, on the CityWalk just outside the gates of Universal. They are more moderately priced than the locales inside the theme parks, too.

* . Don't put blind faith in GPS, and especially don't put much faith in a rookie GPS user. The two brothers-in-law on the trip had GPS units. The one navigating for me was a rookie. We got lost or missed our turns on several occasions until we knew the lay of the land and he figured out the danged GPS.

* . Have a couple of bucks worth of American quarters in your vehicle. Even if you don't get lost, you'll be on toll highways. You can't always get change. I lucked out on one occasion, asking the person behind me for change for a dollar.

I admit I initially wasn't as excited about our trip as much as most of the others going, but I enjoyed it nearly as much as the kids, and that's saying a lot. My daughter still has braids in her hair from the final day at Universal. She never wants to take them out.

The nation going through a time of economic cutbacks and hardship, but that doesn't mean that you can't enjoy a good vacation. If you know how to get bargain accommodations and makes a sensible choice of attractions and amusements, then it is possible for you to enjoy a vacation in Orlando, Florida even in this period of economic downturn. I would like to show you how to do it.

The first place to start your preparation is in the area of accommodations. Hotel living coupled with continuous restaurant eating can be expensive. Fortunately you have other alternatives if you are visiting Orlando. During the past ten years there has been boom in the offering of vacation homes and condos for rent to vacationers. So, instead of looking for hotel rooms for your family, it would be wiser to search for a vacation rental home. You will not only get lower per person accommodation costs, but you can save money by preparing some of your meals in your own kitchen.

How much can you save? Let's take a look at a few examples. Suppose you are traveling with your whole family (spouse, two kids, and one cousin!) you can get a luxurious three bedroom rental home for as low as $115 per night. This is the price that prevails in the low period, but even in the peak periods (Christmas, New Years) the rate is no more than $135 per night. If you are traveling with five people then the per-person per night rate ranges from $23 to $27. If you choose a to go with 8 people rate drrops to $14-$17, then you can save even more.

"We had a bit of a stress out initially as we managed to get lost and had the wrong key code. However once that was sorted we found the villa to be lovely, very efficient air con. Perfect retreat from the disney hyperactivity. The evenings in the pool watching the sunset and fireworks from magic kingdoms display were voted tops by us all. We chose not to have the option of heating in the pool and we didnt miss it. Our trip was first 2 weeks sept 08. We would definately return as the location and everything suited us, as we had a car, which is really essential at this resort. The only thing that we thought the owners may consider changing with renting the place out to so many folk, is the cream carpets, they are sumptuous but easily mark. I am not complaining but one of the first things my keen eye for detail noticed were stains on the carpets, which is out of keeping as the whole place was otherwise spotless, beautiful and luxurious. We were out most of the time but when we came home if we werent in the pool, we were chatting and emailing friends/family, as there is full broadband access, we played pool and air hockey or watched tv, mainly the weather channel as we had a couple of hurricanes looming during our stay. I would have happily lived there forever and we all referred to Aladdins retreat as home and were sad to have to leave at the end of our holiday. We have been to florida before but never stayed at such a lovely place and will never stay anywhere else again. Thanks to the owners for letting us share this wonderful Villa."

"This villa was our fourth rental on Emerald Island and it was the best equipped. Many of the places give you 3 plates and no toilet paper, but Aladdins Retreat was very well equipped, especially the kitchen. The pool was very warm and the big screen tv a plus even though we had to watch our NY Giants lose on it! You cannot beat the location, about 10 minutes from WDW and centrally located to just about any restaurant that you could want. The only minor complaints were with the management company. The front light was out as was the light in the pool and we could never connect to the internet. Other than that, we had a fabulous time in a very lovely villa!"

"The property is excellent value for money. The owners have done an excellent job in making you feel like you are at home and not just in a rental villa. We were so impressed we reduced our plans to visit Tampa for a week following our visit to Orlando and booked an extra few days at the villa. As is the case in most of America, it will be essential to have a car to get to the villa and to travel to theme parks etc, but these are all within approximately 10 minutes drive of the villa. We will definately be booking again the next time we visit the states. The owners Colin and Sue and the management company they use have been excellent and really helpful throughout the whole process"

"Look no further! If you want a really spacious comfortable home from home, with that extra touch of luxury for an instantly relaxing family holiday, then this really is the villa for you. Our third visit to Florida and this the best property we have stayed in by far. This large, extremely smart, and spotlessly clean villa is situated about 5 minute drive to the main theme parks in a quiet residential development in the countryside well away from main roads. The stunning vista and local birdlife are enchanting, breakfast outside with the sun rising over head the the pool by moonlight both experiences that should not be missed. Our children loved chilling out in front of the giant TV in the lounge after a tiring day at the theme parks. Very comfortable and well equipped and particularly suitable for one or two families (or extended family) to share, with a particularly enormous master bedroom suite, we would have no hesitation recommending this property to others. Difficult to understand why anyone would ever want to pay a fortune to stay in a noisy, cramped hotel... Highly recommended"

Golf courses in the Orlando area provide for the beginner to the Pro.

To a beginner it does seam rather intimidating but if you want to have a go Florida is the place to try it. All equipment is availably to hire you can hire golf carts, clubs, buy balls and tees. The weather is perfect and I have been reliably told that there are more than 28 golf courses within 30 minutes of Disney

Last year we had guests stay at our villa and played golf every day for 14 days and on some days managed 2 rounds (That’s a golf nut for you)

The courses are too numerous to mention individually but I will try to give you a general insight.

Disney World is reputed to have some of the finest golf in Orlando

Walt Disney world golf Magnolia

This is the biggest of all the Disney Courses and am told by friends that have played it one of the most difficult of the Disney courses

This is a shorter course than the Magnolia but still a challenge with lots of water

Walt Disney world Golf Osprey Ridge

This course is a North Carolina style with excellent picturesque landscapes

Walt Disney world golf Oak Trail

This was built as a walking course back in 1980. This is a good course for beginners we found it to be the cheaper of the Disney courses

Walt Disney world golf Lake Buena vista

Non of our family actually played but we felt it seemed like an older fashioned course

The other courses that friends and family all agreed was their favorite was the Orange National course situated on Avalon Road off Highway 192 here s 3 courses one called

Crooked cat This is a links style course and is quite unpredictable (so the hubby said)

another called panther lake This course is 7295 yards Quite impressive

and the other being National Tooth this is an executive 9 hole course just my cup of tee( so to speak)on this course they allow mum or dad to pay the fee and the kids go along .

Celebration also has an exceptionally good course and was designed by Robert Trent Senior and Robert Trent Junior. This course is rated 4 stars by Golf digest. There is also a great tavern called Windmill tavern for breakfast and lunch.

Prices for all of the courses here vary a great deal and are changeable winter and summer times so best to call for times and prices.

Disney has a new fantastic ride at Animal Kingdom which is called Expedition Everest. It takes you through the dangerous Himalayas mountains. In addition, started in 2005, Bush Gardens in Tampa has a another great ride called Sheikra. It is 200ft tall, 70mph, 138ft drop - ride and is now Florida's tallest roller coaster. The minimum height requirement for that ride is 54 inches.
Sea World has 3 new gentler rides for juniors in its children's play area, including Shamu's express, which is a killer-whale themed roller-coaster.
Islands of Adventure is part of Universal Studios and has a number of fantastic rides including the Hulk coaster and the Spider-man show on Marvel Super-Hero Island, as well as toddler options on the famous Dr Seuss's patch.
The best place to stay for value for money is in a privately owned vacation rental home: You will have lots of space and privacy. The great majority of these houses are equipped with private pools. Some even have lots to do indoors if it rains, such as games rooms, books and board games. These houses are family homes so you will have your own private room on holiday.
